Using nature as our instrument to create a nature orchestra continues to be a good interactive way to engage participants. With the use of some innovative technology, this enables us to facilitate an immersive experience accessible for all ages and abilities.
We continue to work with a variety of schools who have mixed access to nature due to location and funding. Nature serves as an accessible, hands-on classroom that sparks originality, sensory engagement, and a deeper connection between the creative output and the natural world.
Nature offers a vast, free, and diverse supply of materials—such as leaves, seeds, twigs, stones, and flowers—that can be used for sculpture, collage, dyeing, and model-making. This encourages resourcefulness, understanding of material properties, and a move beyond conventional supplies, leading to more original artwork.
The natural environment can be a source of both instrument materials and compositional inspiration. Students can create simple instruments (e.g., shakers from sticks with shells, wind chimes from reeds) while studying the sounds and rhythms found in nature (e.g., birdsong, the rustle of leaves, the flow of water) to encourage their musical improvisations.
